Application Requirements

Tufts accepts the Common Application as well as the Coalition Application. Materials required include:

• High school transcript, including senior grades
• Two letters of recommendation: one from a junior teacher or senior year in a significant academic class (maths, natural science, and social science, English or foreign languages), and one from a high school counselor

How to Apply to Tufts as a Transfer Student

All applicants for Tufts University transfer are required to complete the Common Application. Fill out the Transfer Application.Each college you attend must submit a College Report.

Application Process for International Student and Admissions

English Proficiency Testing

International applicants from countries where English is not the official language must provide proof of English proficiency.

If you have been enrolled for at least 3 years in a school where English is the instruction language, then this requirement can be waived.

Tufts charges $75 for application fees. Tufts students who cannot pay the application fee for financial reasons must request a written request from their school counselor.

Yield Rate

Let’s now look at Tufts University’s yield rate. This is the percentage of students accepted who choose to enroll divided by the total number of admitted students.

It was 51% in the Class of 2025. Comparatively, other top private universities have yield rates that are slightly higher such as Duke (61%) and Northwestern (60%).

How Tufts Rates Applicants

Six factors are deemed “very important” by Tufts for their admissions process. These include the rigor of secondary school records, GPA, class rank, and essays.

Extracurricular activities, talent/ability, and other extracurricular activities are considered “important.” These factors include standardized test scores and admissions interviews.

The admissions office says: “Take the time to review your extracurricular and awards sections to add any additional details or activities you have been involved in.”

Tufts, along with many other schools (not all), will not consider your resume in your application. They also warn that you should not let college applications consume your life.

If your schedule is jammed, I recommend that you prioritize your academic success in senior year courses. This will make it easier to apply.

Tips for Applying to Tufts

The following information is important if you want to join the approximately 35,000 Jumbos applying for the next admissions cycle.

• As mentioned earlier, Tufts University has a test-optional policy for the Class of 2027.
• The Common Application requires you to identify the School or Program to which you are applying. This could be a) The School of Arts and Sciences b), the School of Engineering c), BFA program d), BFA+BA/BS Combined degree, or e) a 5-year Combined degree with the New England Conservatory.
• Tufts doesn’t offer interviews on campus with admissions staff. However, applicants in their first year can request an optional interview with an alumni member from the Tufts Admissions Network.
• Tufts considers ” demonstrated interests” when determining whether you are eligible for admission. It will be noted whether you visited campus (in non-pandemic time), contacted an admissions officer, and so forth.
• Tufts requires that you devote sufficient time and effort to the short-answer essays. The prompts for the 2021-22 cycle are as follows:

Applicants to the School of Arts and Sciences and School of Engineering must answer the following questions:

1) What aspects of the Tufts undergraduate experience are most compelling to you? In short, “Why Tufts?” (100 to 150 words).

2) We’d love to learn more about you. Please answer one of these three questions. (200-250 words).

A) Learning is fun. What sparks your intellectual curiosity?

B. How has your childhood – home, family, community, and neighborhood – shaped you into who you are today?

C) Are you ready to engage with and fight for social justice?

Tufts Early Decision Decision Date

Tufts conducts 2 rounds in its Early Decision Program. Applicants should expect to hear a decision by mid-December.There are three possible decisions applicants could receive: accepted or deferred.

Accepted students can enroll at the university. Deferred students’ applications are moved to the regular pool. Students who have been denied will not be allowed to apply to Tufts again for the entire academic calendar.

Students who submit all financial assistance application materials before the deadline will receive details about their financial aid package within seven business days of being accepted.

Tufts GPA Requirements

Although many schools require a minimum GPA, this requirement is not mandatory for all applicants.

GPA is what matters. It’s the GPA that you need to have a chance at getting in. We look at the average GPA of current students to determine this.

Average GPA: 4.04

The average GPA at Tufts University is 4.04.

(Most schools have a GPA of 4.0 or higher, but some report an unweighted average. Although this school didn’t report its average GPA, we have estimated it using data from more than 1,000 schools.

Tufts will require you to have a 4.04 GPA. To compete with other applicants, you must have nearly straight A’s for all classes. To show that college-level academics are possible, you must take challenging courses – AP and IB.

Your GPA cannot be changed if you are a senior or junior student. If your GPA falls below 4.04 (the school average), you will need a higher SAT/ACT score. This will allow you to compete with other applicants with higher GPAs.

SAT and ACT Requirements

SAT Score Choice Policy

Your school’s Score Choice policy is crucial to your testing strategy.

Tufts follows the Score Choice policy “All Scores.” “

Tufts will require you to submit all SAT scores that you have ever taken to them.

Although this sounds scary, most schools don’t consider all scores equally. They won’t average scores from two different tests, so if one score is 1300 and the other is 1500, it doesn’t mean they will average them.

The school may take your highest score on one test date. Some schools even offer Superstores, which combine your highest score from all test dates with your best section score.

Many students worry about too many test scores. Tufts may not appreciate too many efforts to improve your score. But how many is enough?

We learned from research and speaking with admissions officers that 4-6 is the safest number to submit.

Retaking the test can help you get the best chance of being admitted to college. They don’t care how many times it’s been taken. They will only care about your score.

Colleges will start to question why you aren’t improving each time you take the test more than six times. They will challenge your ability to learn and study.

We strongly recommend that you retake the test if your score is below 6. You should seriously consider preparing for the SAT and retaking it if your SAT score is below 1540.

There is nothing to lose, and you have the potential to raise your score significantly and increase your chances of being accepted.

Tufts ACT Requirements

Like the SAT, Tufts doesn’t likely have a hard ACT cutoff. However, if your score is too low, it will result in your application being thrown out.

Tufts’ average ACT score is 33. This makes Tufts Highly Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score for 32-year-olds is the same as the 75th percentile ACT Score of 34.

Tufts may not have a minimum ACT requirement. However, if your application is below 32, it won’t be easy to get in unless you have other awe-inspiring applications.

Many applicants score 33 or higher, so a 32 will appear academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

You have a significant advantage if you take the ACT over the SAT. This dramatically affects your testing strategy.

When you send ACT scores, colleges have complete control over their tests. You can take ten tests and send only your highest score. This is in contrast to the SAT, where you must send all of your test results.

This means you have more opportunities than you might think to increase your ACT score. You should take the ACT as often as possible to meet the school’s ACT requirement. Once you are satisfied with your final score, you can send it to all schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

Most colleges don’t superscore the ACT. Superscore is where the school takes the highest section scores from all test dates and then adds them together to give the best composite score. Most schools will only accept your highest ACT score in one sitting.
